Homeward Bound

Tonight I wasn't able to make it to the gym, so I did a simple work out at home with Cody spotting.  Here's what went day-yown.

For time...
22 Lunges
21 Dips

16 Lunges
15 Dips

10 Lunges
9 Dips

I topped it off with 15 sit ups (which wasn't necessary) and even though it took less than 5 minutes, I was worked!  It amazes me how you can get a work out so quickly.  That is why I love Cross Fit!

WORD

Today's work out went really well!  I must admit, I'm surprised by how addicted I am getting to Cross Fit.  I wasn't "anti" before, but I just wasn't excited about it.  Even when I got started I was a bit reluctant to get into it.  Now?  I dig it.  Yesterday I did a super tough work out that I wasn't sure I would even finish - but finish I did!  Here is what went down:

30 Push Ups
50 Sumo Dead Lift High Pulls
50 Dips
25 Jumping Pull Ups
20 Hand Stand Push Ups

...and I did it all in 13:10.  Not band, right?  What up.  Today I was back at the gym and did "Cindy" - this entailed 5 pull ups, 10 push ups and 15 squats as many times as possible in 20 minutes.  I did 9 rounds!  I surprised even myself with that one.   It was hard, not gonna lie - I was moaning during the last few reps, but it felt so good to finish it all!

There were loads of people at the gym this morning which was so cool to see!  Funny thing - two guys that I went to High School with walked in the door and when we saw each other we were like, "....hey, wait a sec..."  Hilarious - TR Gourley and Kurt Jackson.  They did really well, I guess they've been coming for a while and we've just never been there at the same time.

Tomorrow is the Cross Fit Games up in Midvale - Cody and I are heading up to check things out.  I'm really excited!  Also, Jason told me today that I should consider getting certified so I can help train...who would have thought that I would be down for something like that?  Do you think I'll get a whistle?  Oooh, I really want a whistle.

Michael

That was the name of the work out I did on Monday.  Not super brutal, but I was worked when it was done!  Here is the jist:

3 reps of...
25 sit ups
25 back extensions
400 meter run

Sadly, it took me 22 minutes to do that.  It felt good, though!  I was all sweaty and heaving when I finished.  Jason was a big help when I was warming up - he helped me with my form for squats and pull ups.  I can feel myself getting stronger...now if only it would look like it.

Burpees...no really, Burpees

So I haven't been to the gym in 4 days because I'm LAME.  Wait no, that's not true - I got really sick on Tuesday night and was out for the count yesterday.  This means I need to make up some work outs!  On Monday I did presses - here is what went down:

Shoulder Press: 1-1-1-1-1 reps
Push Press: 3-3-3-3-3 reps
Push Jerk: 5-5-5-5-5 reps

For the life of me I can't remember the weight I lifted for each set...I think for the shoulder press I did 15lbs, for the push press I did....30lbs?  Then for the push jerk I did 40 - 50lbs.  Word.

Today (or tomorrow) I need to do 50 Burpess for time.  That's when you jump about a foot off the ground, then hop down and do a push up.  Yeah...we'll see how I do.  But I did just purchase more fancy work-out gear, so at least I'll look cute passed out in the corner!

...For Time

On Thursday Cody and I hit the gym.  The work out was to do as many sets of 10 pull ups and 10 thrusters in 20 minutes.  Since I am still a weakling, I only used the sand bar as for my Thrusters.  By about 12 minutes, I was SO ready to throw in the towel!  My legs were killing me - they were still sore from doing thrusters a few days before.  I have to say I did better than I thought I would - I was seriously considering giving up.  Just stopping and calling it quits.  But finish I did - I did 10 sets in 20 minutes.  Sweet!  And ugh, tiring.  But Cody did tell me that he is proud of me when we were driving home - that's all the motivation I need.

The eating thing?  Well, I still need to do better.  When Cody isn't home I eat like crap.  I mean, I'm still aware of what I'm doing and I'm not being stupid  - but I did have an entire bag of popcorn last night.  EW!  What the...?  It helps when Cody is home because he is so good about eating right.  I better get on board - I want to see some changes soon!

Callus

Today's work out?  Thrusters.  That's when you hold a bar with weights at your shoulders, squat down, then push up with your heels (not really on your toes, like this dude...who does he think he is?) and push the weight over your head.  You do 7 reps.  My hands hurt.

It wasn't awful, but here is the weight I did for each lift:  45, 45, 45, 50, 50, 50, 55.  WooHoo!  I can feel that my hands are getting calluses from doing pull ups and things like thrusters - but I'm also not getting as tired when I do the work out and I actually look forward to going.  Who knew?

8 minutes

Back at the gym today!  I did the basic warm up - pull ups, sit ups, push ups and squats.  Then Cody had me work on Clings with a sand-weighted bar.  Not too heavy, but not hollow.  Having some weight to it helped my form immensely!  Then it was time to get serious and start the work out.  Today's task?

Cling - 15 reps
Run - 100 meters
3 rounds

So I begin the clings and it's going well, but the run was a bit more rusty since I haven't gone running in forever!  I kept my stride long and paced myself.  The work out was a bit brutal, but it did feel great!  I pushed the last part of the run and made it back in about 8 min.  Not bad!  I am exhausted - I need to get to bed.  Tomorrow we are back at the gym in the morning!...if I can move.

10 For Time

Today I was back at the CrossFit Gym to do some more work outs.  The last few days I have been SO sore - ouch.  Though it was painful, I loved feeling that pain, you know?  My arms were pretty bad, along with my legs...ok, everything was bad.  But today I felt great and headed to the gym with Cody.  He had me do 10 of the following -

Pull Ups
Push Ups
Sit Ups
Squats

He timed me and I did them all in 02:47.  Surprisingly, I felt pretty good after the pull ups and the push ups, I nearly made it through the sit ups without stopping, but no dice!  Once I finished I felt good and asked if I should do more...but alas, I must pace myself.  But I don't feel weak or anything!  Great feeling.  Cody works tomorrow and Sunday, but Monday I'll be meeting him at the gym - gotta keep going!

Cave In

I have done it.  I have caved.  I have started Cross Fit with Cody.  What is Cross Fit?  An intense work out that will whip your butt into shape!  Cody started Cross Fit months ago and has loved it.  Well, it's more of a love/hate relationship.  He has loved the results, but sometimes the work outs can be brutal!  That is why I have never jumped on board.  He has tried for months to get me to start, but I wasn't too interested.  He and some of his friends recently opened a gym dedicated to the Cross Fit program and they have lots of people interested and working out there.  I am so proud of him!  The gym looks great and it's nice to have a place that has all the equipment you need.  As I said before, it's pretty intense and it kicks your butt.  However, I want to get in shape.  I want to get stronger.  The best thing to achieve that?  Cross Fit.  Yes, sir.  Yesterday was my first time at the gym and it went pretty well!  Cody taught me the correct form for squats (turns out I never did them correctly), spotted me when I did some pull ups, I did sit ups and overhead squats and push ups.  Yeah, baby!  I am feeling it today, but it's a good sore.  I will probably go back with him on Friday to do some more stuff.  The link to his gym is on the side bar, go take a gander - it has all the information about Cross Fit on there!  Then you can slap on some spandex and we can go together!

Taking the Plunge - Round 3

My behavior as of late is inexcusable!  What in the WORLD have I been doing?  Oh, not working out, that's right.  I have slacked and avoided fitness - and I can't take it any more.

The time is now - the time was then, but it's past then and it is now now and it's time to get my butt in gear.  No more excuses.  No more justifications.  No more, I tell you!  It's time to dive into the deep end and fight for the fitness.

What does this mean, exactly?  This means that every day I will be doing some sort of work out.  Be it running at the track, swimming at the rec or sit ups at home, I WILL do something every day to work towards the figure I want.  I have a busy Summer coming up and I want to look great!  You would think that would be it's own reward, but I was recently enticed by a motivational idea my friend Tanya uses when she works out - each time she works out, she gives herself a dollar.  That's right - a dollar a day, that could be $30 a month that I can spend on whatever I want!  Which could be loads of Advil and IcyHot, depending how much my muscles hate me.

This also means that I need to fine tune my diet - see, remember how I was doing 'The Zone' with Cody?  Yeah, not so much any more.  He's still with it for the most part, but I lazed off months ago.  Regardless of what food plan I'm on, the point is I need to be more conscience of what I put into my body.

This is it, friends.  I've had it.  I've reached my breaking point - I can't take the softness any more.  This is the 3rd time I've attempted to get myself healthy and by damn, I'm going to do it.  Ready.  Steady.  Fit.

Ball of Fitness

Does anyone have one of these?  Ok, I'm sure most of you do.  Recently I have been very interested in purchasing one of these lovely fitness orbs.  I heard that they are great to simply sit on while your at the computer, helps tone your core.  How great is that?  Blogging and toning?  Can life get better?  I submit that it cannot!  Add that to it's magnificent way to help with sit-ups and the like...I'm totally on board.

Well, I'm back at the track tomorrow - and I'm there to stay.  I don't mean that my mail will be forwarded there or anything, but I'm creating a schedule now which means I have certain days that I am there - no more excuses.  To be honest?  I'm very pumped!  I can't wait to listen to my fitness playlist and use my new headphones (thanks girls!) and slip into fitness oblivion.  Rock star body, here I come.
OH!  Before I sign off, I must pass on this uber-easy recipe that Cody and I have enjoyed whilst being in 'The Zone'.  It's so easy and you can alter it to your liking, but recently we have been enjoying pineapple chicken for dinner.

2 Chicken Breasts
1 Can Pineapple Chunks
Slivered Almonds
...yeah, that's it.

Cut up the chicken breasts and place in saucepan with a little olive oil.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  Add some of the juice from the can of pineapple, drain the rest.  When chicken is nearly cooked through, add pineapple chunks and a palmful of slivered almonds.  Cook for another 5-7 minutes, serve warm.  YUM.

PS - have you noticed that there is a recipe etiquette?  Like, there is a certain way you have to talk (or type) when giving a recipe?  "Add pineapple, stir occasionally.  Cook until brown, serve warm."  What is that?

Balance

I believe Cody and I are on day 5 of 'The Zone' and it's going well! Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Cody brought home a bunch of info on what we can eat and some recipe ideas. I was pleasantly surprised, lots of things to choose from. I will admit, there are times that I just want salty chips, cookies or some other kind of treat. And truth be told, we really can eat anything we want, we just have to eat the right amount of carbs, fats and proteins. Basically, we have to balance. Cody has been great at keeping us on track. It's sort of strange - after we eat, I feel full but I don't feel like I just ate a gut bomb, you know what I mean? I feel...light. It's great! I just love that it's not totally limiting, since we're all aware that I have absolutey no self-control. It helps that Cody and I are doing this together, we keep each other in check. Tomorrow we're planning on going shopping and getting some more healthy stuff and we're stoked to see the results. After all, bikini season will be here before I know it!

Calorie counter

Food is around us all the time, right?  Driving around you can pass loads of fast food joints that smell delicious and beckon you to partake of their salty, deep fried goodness.  Since I have decided to take on 'the zone', I'm actually excited about filling my house with more fruit and vegetables and cooking healthier meals.  Are you aware of the Schwann's Man?  The ginormous truck that comes by twice a month and sells frozen foods?  Anyway, our Schwann's Man came by last night with a new catalog of meals.  Normally Cody and I just purchase their ice cream because it's Heaven, but I flipped through the pages last night and noticed they have this low-calorie line of foods for those who are wanting to be healthier.  To my surprise, some of the things looked pretty good!  Vegetable blends, green beans, fruit, chicken, etc.  I was reading the nutritional info and then it hit me - oh my, am I going to be that person who is obsessed with reading the nutrition facts of everything I eat?  Will I be adding up calories in my head all day long?  I think in a way I have to be, but I also think there are two kinds of calorie counters.  There is the overly obsessed person who checks every. single. label and forbids an extra calorie to be put in their mouth.  Then there is the other person who simply keeps track of what they have been eating during the day, being smart about what they eat.  I have met the crazy calorie counter and it's not a pretty site - I watched and she meticulously went through labels of cottage cheese, ketchup, wheat crackers and everything else that was in the fridge.  Calling out every few minutes, "This is so bad for you!  How can people eat this?!  250 calories for that??  This is awful for you, that's 45 minutes on the treadmill right there".   No thank you, I don't want to be that crazy.  But being sensible about the kind of fuel I'm putting in my body...I think I can be that person.

In the Zone

Whoa - I promise I won't slack at my posting duties anymore.  So guess what I get to do today?  Start "The Zone" diet.  Yep.  I actually hate the word 'diet' because it reminds me of rice cakes and water, but Cody is starting 'The Zone' today and I thought I would do it with him.  His entire crew at the Fire Department is starting a huge fitness regimen today, a contest of sorts, that will last for 3 months.  They will all be working  out and eating better - pretty good idea for a Fire Department, I must say.  If those yummy uniforms weren't enough, now they'll all be fit and dreamy!

I'm very much looking forward to this.  Having Cody do this as well will make it easier to stick to!  Has anyone out there done it?  Have any tips or great recipes you would like to share?  Please do!  In the interim, I still do some fitness things here and there...but not as much as I would like or need to.  It's tough to get motivated, but I know I can do it.  I know I can!

Resolushons

Hello?  Anyone out there?  I'm baaack!  After a far too long hiatus, I have returned.  So shameful, my behavior.  I certainly didn't plan on being the biggest slacker ever, but it turns out I am very open to distractions.  I was crazy busy with Holiday frivolity and let time get away from me.  But nevermore!

It's a new year and that calls for a refreshing update in my fitness plan.  Naturally, I did nothing but bad things to my body this past month.  I ate like a horse and I saw very few vegetables.  My poor running shoes are begging to be worn and my work-out clothes are clean and laying neatly in my closet...waiting.  I realize that after being away from my routine for so long it will almost be like starting from scratch and yet, I'm hoping that I can get back into the swing of things without much trouble...who am I kidding.

Cody's work schedule is much more dependable and he will be home more, which gives me more opportunities to get myself back to the track.  So here we go!  Get up, dust of the party confetti and lets get to work!
